LETTERS FROM THE EXECUTIVES

Donna Marxer

FROM THE DIRECTOR

I’m back! At least for the time being. As well as helping out with the new season of panels, I’m aiding and abetting our Auction chairperson, Norma Greenwood with her plans for a super event on November 12th. Our second time around with an auction, in keeping with a downsized economy, we are making our offerings small in scale and calling it a “Bijou Auction (of the small and precious)”. We’ve learned that most people prefer small art works for their tight New York spaces. Of course, there will also be fabulous jewelry, art supplies and great goods and services as well as good food, drink and music. This time we’ll be offering a more modest ticket price of $25 advance, $30 at the door. We hope to see you! Since I am only the Acting Executive Director, ATOA is mounting a search for a new more permanent officer. It is a great job for someone with a head for detail, boundless energy and a lust for mini-power in the art world. Call us if you are interested, meanwhile, it’s business as usual with a great season ahead.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN

We are ready to offer a season of stimulating and engaging panel subjects, with literally something for everyone. Molly Barnes and her programming committee members have done a magnificent job in putting together the fall lineup. Our events begin with an opening. Its the October 18th start of the ATOA 2002 Curator’s Choice winner’s show from 6:00 to 9:00 P. M. at the 450 Broadway Gallery at Grand Street, 4th floor. You’ll meet the artists, their curator, Kim Foster and many ATOA board members and staff. “Ceramics in the Art World,” leads off the regular panels on Friday, October 25th, moderated by Sylvia Netzer, with Ann Rothman, Ron Kuchta, Philip Zuchman and Mary Frank. On November 1st, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Fluxus movement, with Alison Knowles moderating and panelists Larry Miller, Peter Frank and Emily Harvey. November 8th Dan Conchollar moderates a panel exploring some of the many ways artists get ripped off. Panelists include Marissa Rich (an attorney) and artists Bernise D’Vorzon, Donna Marxer and Philip Zuchman. Our fundraising auction occurs on Tuesday, November 12th. Then on the next Friday, November 15th we return to a popular subject here, representation, with “Representational Painting III-Contemporary Narratives: Stories and Their Fragments, moderated by Joel Silverstein. On that panel are Dominique Nahas, Steve Mumford and others. Friday the 22nd is our Open Screening night where you can show your slides to an appreciative and supportive audience mainly composed of other artists. After the Thanksgiving break we return on Friday, December 6th with “The Digital Experience,” moderated by Molly Barnes and featuring artists Erwin Redl, Peter Terezakis and James Seawright. On Friday the 13th our mood lifts with “Spiritual Forces,” moderated by Ann McCoy, with panelists Lance Malen, Carolee Schneemann, Leslie Dill, Chrysanne Stathocos and Maxine Henryson. After the winter holiday break we come back on January 24th with “Into the Woods: Environmental artists move off the canvas,” moderated by Donna Marxer featuring other artists Jane Ingram, Betty Baumont, Bill Botzow and Richard Mills. Completing the fall series is “Expressionism II,” moderated by Joel Silverstein featuring Robert C. Morgan and Julien Hatton.
