  Fall 2010

Executive Letter
Doug Sheer
From the Chairman

Dear Friends of ATOA,

Another fall arrives, and so too another season of Artists Talk On Art. This fall features eight interesting, informative and practical discussions that can enliven your consideration of the issues in contemporary art. ATOA remains, since 1975, not only the longest running panel series in art, but also one of its most fascinating. Panels will start on September 30th with "Please Appropriate Me," a look at the idea of using other art as inspiration. Then, there are panels on October 14th (Jay Milder film), October 21st (comparing hand built to Digital sculpture techniques and technology), October 28th (looking at science, technology, quackery and art), November 11th (Wall Street, indexing of art values and the impact on galleries and artists), November 18th (abstract art and materiality with Rebecca Smith), December 9th (performance art performances organized by Vernita Nemec) and December 16th (Sam Fienstein's Hans Hofmann film and critic/historian Irving Sandler).

We continue in our new venue, Soho 20 Chelsea Gallery, located on the third floor of the 547 West 27th Street gallery building, between 10th and 11th Avenues. Panels and dialogs happen on Thursdays (except First Thursdays) at 7:00 PM, with a short reception, like an opening, at 6:30 PM, and run until around 9:00 PM. The admission is the same, $7 for adults, $3 for students or seniors with ID. Passholders are admitted free, consider a pass-holder membership for that reason or if you wish to qualify for the ATOA-enabled health plan (via RBA Insurance Strategies).

Work goes on in the preservation of the ATOA tape archive with over 1,200 event recordings being archived. Interns or volunteers have been helping this process along.

ATOA would be delighted to hear from others who would like to join in helping to further the preservation process, help to plan panels for the next series, operate the camcorder on Thursdays or have abilities in fund raising or grant writing.

We're excited about the new series and think you will be too. Plan on visiting us Thursday evenings at Soho 20 Chelsea.

Yours,

Doug Sheer
