There is a great new panel season about to begin, with work done by the
programming committee, ably steered by Molly Barnes, our new programming
director. Videos of films shot in the 1950s at the Cedar Bar and on 10th
Street featuring Willem de Kooning, Harold Rosenberg and Herman Cherry lead
off the new series on February 2nd. On the 9th of February, one of my
favorite subjects, renaissance art and its impact on today's artists will be
considered. Friends of the high tech in art will be excited to hear about
Shapes of Sounds/Sounds of Shapes on February 23rd. On March 16th, artist
Mary Frank will be seen in dialog with the critic Eleanor Munro. Our Molly
Barnes will interview artist Wolf Kahn on March 23rd.
Remember, our panel themes come from you, the artist audience, so don't be
bashful about your ideas. Let us know which artists or themes you would like
to see covered next fall. It is not too early to be planning for the
2001-2002 season. Also keep in mind that our speakers are sometimes
substituted at the very last minute, so call (212) 779-9250 for up-to-date
listing information.
Critical dialog on the arts may be the soul of ATOA panels, but money is the
lifeblood of any not-for-profit organization. So at the moment, I am mainly
focused on organizing the second ATOA fine art auction benefit which will
be held in the Fall. Many artists are donating their works to benefit the series,
perhaps you would like to donate some work as well or help us put on the
event, if so just let me know. There will be great food and ample drinks.
Once again, we are offering the opportunity for artists to compete for a
chance to appear on a panel at ATOA through our spring Curator's Choice
slide competition. What is special this year, though, is that our guest
curator Denise Bibro, director of the Denise Bibro Gallery has offered to
have a special exhibit of the work of the winners at her gallery. So don't
miss out, make sure we receive your slides and application no later than
March 31, 2001. Just see the listing in this flyer
for more complete details.
