ATOA is once again on the move. This time we are moving into the
middle of the art world’s most dynamic neighborhood, Chelsea.
And, its most gallery populated block, 25th Street between 10th and
11th Avenues. This will be a new place but represents reuniting with
an old set of friends, the members of the SOHO20 Chelsea Gallery, at
511 West 25th Street, 6th floor. We spent many happy years with this
same gallery when it was located at Broome and Greene Streets in SOHO.
Thank you to Cynthia Mailman and Lucy Hodgson for the invitation and
sponsorship. We are also thankful to the Phoenix Gallery for the run
of recent years together, and we wish them well as they too undergo
some important changes. Kudos to Linda Handler, the director and Hope
Carter, vice president of their board who acted as intermediaries
between us and Phoenix’ board.
Sadly, Donna Marxer has left us as executive director, although she
remains on our board. Her shoes will be hard to fill, but Regina
Sheer is squeezing in temporarily as acting director (she’s been the
associate director for several years) while we continue our search for
a more permanent replacement for Donna. We hope to make our final
selection later this winter.
Our Curator’s Choice competition is on again, this time with Chelsea’s
own Stefan Stux as judge and host of the winner’s show at his gallery.
You’ll get to meet the winning artists and see their work at our
final panel of the season in May and later at their show at Stux.
Meanwhile, if you would like to compete see the instructions
elsewhere in this flyer.
Molly Barnes, our programming director, on the run between coasts,
and the committee have put together a great series for winter and
spring. The regular season begins on Friday, February 7th.
Finally, I want to thank the many artists who donated works to our
successful auction fundraiser this past November, which raised
much-needed money. And, thank Norma Greenwood, our fundraising
chairperson and her volunteers. Thanks, as well to the many generous
friends who poured in despite the soaking rain to support us. And, of
course, to Clodagh, the greatest hostess we could have wished for.
