Artists Talk On Art (ATOA) presents its annual benefit slide competition.
Winners will have their work exhibited at Nix Gallery at 104 Reade Street, New York City.
Proceeds will be used to further the mission of ATOA, which is to provide a
public forum for critical discussions in the arts. There will be an award panel on May 6, 2005 at the School of Visual Arts (SVA), 209 East 23rd Street, New York City. Winners will have the opportunity to discuss their work before the public at that ATOA panel. They will receive award certificates, and have the opportunity to show slides of work in addition to their winning entries. The evening will be videotaped. Panel postponed until next season because Michael Walls can't attend due to a serious medical condition. Curator: Michael Walls, independent curator. Michael Walls has curated numerous exhibitions, such as "Painting a passionate response," at the Painting Center in NY, "Fourteen Artists in Los Angeles," at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in CA, and "The State of California Painting," at Queen Elizabeth II Art Council, in New Zealand. He has been director of several art galleries including Susan Caldwell Gallery, Siegal Contemporary Art, O'Hara Gallery, and Kouros Gallery. He has run his own galleries in NY and CA, and is currently co-director of the Howard Scott Gallery in NY. Deadline: entries must be postmarked by March 27, 2005. Deadline has passed! Please try next year. Fee: $6.00 per slide. Six slides maximum. Checks payable to ATOA. Please do not send cash. Media & Size limitations: Contest is open to all media, and there are no size limitations. However, if the work will not fit in a gallery format, the slides of the work will still be shown during the panel, but the artist may be asked to substitute other work for the exhibition. Slide submission and labeling: Each 35mm slide must be labeled with name, title, medium and dimensions. No glass mounts. No original artworks are accepted. Mail entry form, entry fee, slides and Self Addressed Stamped Envelope to ATOA, 10 Waterside Plaza, Suite 33D, NYC, NY 10010-2608. Slides can not be returned if you don't enclose an SASE with sufficient postage. Slides will not be viewed if the entry fee is insufficient: for example if you send 3 slides and $12, only your first 2 slides will be viewed by the curator. Shipping: Winning artists are responsible for the costs of shipping their work to and from the exhibition. BONUS: Unlike other slide competitions, there are no losers at ATOA! Everyone who enters can receive admission tickets to this Curator's Choice Panel. For each $6 you send, a ticket will be held in your name at the door, and may be picked up the night of the panel. Bring your friends. Learn what really goes on during a competition, and what goes through the mind of a contest juror. Ask the questions that will help you win future contests! ATOA will attempt to screen as many of the submitted slides as possible, time permitting, prior to the presentation of the winners. It provides a chance to see your work before an audience, and to see the contest from the viewpoint of the juror! Seating is on a first come, first serve basis, after that standing room only, and viewing may be limited. Slides will be returned the week after the panel.
